Report on the 4th UNAWE International Workshop PDF Print

25 participants from 15 countries were keen enough to sacrifice half their week-end to take part in the Universe Awareness workshop last Saturday. We heard some of the inspiring UNAWE presentations at Special Session 4 on Astronomy Education and Development at the IAU GA. This complementary one-day workshop showed that SpS4 was the tip of the iceberg of UNAWE programmes.

We heard from Rosa M. Ros in Spain and Cecilia Scorza in Germany where UNAWE has a few years experience already, as well as from other places where the programme has begun more recently.

Common discussions covered topics as diverse as:
- communicating modern astronomy in contexts where local knowledge systems and cosmologies are very much part of life,
- what to do with the famous UNAWE Earthball and
- how to bring in a new programme into countries where curriculum requirements are very tight and teachers have little room for improvisation and innovation.

The presentations will be made available here on the UNAWE website in the next few days.

We encourage everyone who has an interest in astronomy for young children to get in touch and join our international network.
