Review: ASTRONAUTS - The Ultimate Space Game
9 January 2013

  • £9.99
  • Ages 9+
  • 2-5 players
  • Wildcard Games Ltd

ASTRONAUTS is a new card game from Wildcard games that takes players on a journey through the Solar System as they race their opponents to explore as many planets and moons as possible. It's astronomically good fun, easy to learn, educational and highly addictive!

The game is targeted at adults and children over nine years old, and actually manages the impressive feat of being challenging enough to entertain older audiences, and simple enough that even the youngest players will understand the rules fully within a just couple of games.

During a game of ASTRONAUTS players are taken on an exciting exploratory mission to the Sun, the moons of Jupiter, Saturn's rings, Neptune and beyond. Each moon and planet card contains information about the object, including distance from the Sun, gravity in metres per second, circumference and one general fun fact. These facts are for information only and not used to play the game, and while the numbers may entertain a more dedicated astronomical audience, for the general public and younger audiences they may be a little too technical - not to mention they are written in imperial units!

The cards are brilliantly illustrated, with images that are both entertaining and educational. For example the 'space junk' card shows metal fragments and engine parts floating above earth – a feature of space that is often overlooked, but that the younger generation should definitely take into consideration.

Overall the game is clever and exciting, leaving you wanting to play again and again regardless of your astronomical background, and at just £9.99 there's no reason not to give it a try!

ASTRONAUTS is available internationally from www.astronautgames.com or on Amazon. Alternatively, if you live in the UK you can find it in many toy and games shops, museums and planetariums, including Hamleys, the National Space Centre and the Royal Observatory at Greenwich.
