Teenage in Residence: Stephany Turkstra
22 October 2014

Frequently, the UNAWE International Office in Leiden, The Netherlands, is visited by an intern. The duration of these internships always varies. Some stay for a few weeks, others keep us company for months, and yet other interns last for half a year, before spreading their wings and fly towards new adventures. Two weeks ago, the UNAWE office was joined by a high school student – Stephany Turkstra from Da Vinci College Lammenschans in Leiden, The Netherlands. This specific internship flew by quicker than most others; she stayed for two weeks. A short but intense period. Here is Stephany’s story.

“My name is Stephany, I'm currently 15 years old and in VMBO-K graphic media at Da Vinci College Lammenschans. In my spare time I like to draw, paint, film and edit. And every Saturday I go sailing with scouting. In the future I would like to do something with media design or AV production.”

“My internship at UNAWE was for two weeks. I worked on communicating astronomy through high visual social media services - like Instagram, Vine and Kuddle. What I leave behind after two weeks is my final report: ‘Communicating Astronomy through High Visual Social Media Services: Cases of Instagram, Vine and Kuddle Services’.”

“During my time here I learned how to do research and write a report. During this experience I have seen how the university environment works. It felt like I was Penny from the Big Bang Theory because I don't know much about astronomy. I’m not used to work eight hours a day in an office, so it was hard sitting behind a desk for such a long time. But luckily time flies most of the time.”

Stephany did her internship as part of her high school exam. Are you also looking for an internship as part of your high school curriculum? You can apply at UNAWE by sending an email to arends@strw.leidenuniv.nl.

Other high school students are also welcome to apply for a (summer) internship during one of their holidays.
