Universe in a Box in Himalayas
30 March 2016

Last year, children in a small village named Mulbekh in the Ladakh region of the Himalayas were introduced to astronomy by volunteers using Universe in a Box. 45 children from 10-13 years old followed a two-week course where they learned all about the Moon, the Sun and the Solar System.

After the course, students from the 5th grade participated in a closing show for the school, where some of them presented their favourite planet to the audience, while others represented astronauts, traveling from planet to planet.

Apart from teaching elementary school kids, the volunteers also organised astronomy activities for children in the kindergarten in Mulbekh. They used materials from the Universe in a Box such as Earth Balls and models of various other planets. The youngest kids learned a lot by singing songs about the Sun, among other things.

“The kids loved it!”, says Jana Polednikova, who led the course that was run by volunteers. "The Universe in a Box is a great tool and we'll sure use it in the upcoming years."
