A programme by
Asteroid named after UNAWE community member
3 May 2017

An asteroid has been named after the founder of UNAWE Indonesia, Premana W. Premadi. She is an astronomer at the ITB Observatorium Bosscha, Indonesia.

This is in honour of her efforts to promote astronomy in Indonesia and bring about a change in society. Premana also teaches astrophysics and cosmology. She is currently working on a program to empower people from the local community during the development of a new observatory in Timor, Indonesia.

The asteroid was discovered on September 24, 1964 by astronomers from the University of Leiden, The Netherlands. Originally the asteroid had only a number, but was given the name of Premana to celebrate her work. The asteroid is now named 12 937 Premadi.

Since 2005, Premana was a member of the Universe Awareness (UNAWE) International Team. As of 2007, she was founder and chair of UNAWE Indonesia, until 2013.
