Europlanet Launches Exciting Animation on Astrobiology
21 September 2017

Europlanet has premiered its latest educational video as part of a series on astronomy. Astrobiology: Life in the Universe is free to use for educational purposes and can now be found on Youtube.

Are we alone in the Universe?

That is the central question of Europlanet’s newest educational video on astronomy, or more specifically on astrobiology. The video answers that question and shows how planetary scientists are looking for signs of life in other planets, using our very own Earth a laboratory, according to the description.

The video is part of a series that Science Office is producing for their partners at Europlanet. It serves as a tool for educators to use in their activities, made possible by funding from the Horizon 2020 research and innovation programme. Therefore, educators are free to use the video in their activities.

Using an educational video

Educators can use the video as a short documentary that introduces biology in the context of astronomy, for example. It can then be connected to an activity on the biology of plants or animals on Earth, or human life. Or students could explore the various concepts in the video and present them in a science fair.

An exemplary activity is the UNAWE activity Design Your Alien, where students learn about the environmental factors that make Earth habitable and compare them to another world within our Solar System. They will use creative thinking to design an alien life form suited for specific environmental conditions on an extraterrestrial world within our Solar System.

Astrobiology: Life in the Universe was produced by Science Office for Europlanet. This video project has received funding from the European Union’s Horizon 2020 research and innovation programme under grant agreement No 654208.
